Today, many patients are opting for a non-surgical nose job or “15 minute rhinoplasty” as an alternative to traditional nose job surgery. These procedures use a cosmetic filler such as Artefill to reshape the nose using injections rather than surgery. The benefits of a non-surgical nose job include a shorter procedure, faster recovery time, and less discomfort and other side effects. A non-surgical nose job using Artefill can change mild or moderate nose imperfections.
For more than a decade, this injectable filler has been available under the name Artecoll. As a dermal filler, Artefill is also popular for filling in the deep folds running from the nose to the corners of the mouth, as well as reshaping the nose. Non-surgical rhinoplasty using Artefill injections can camouflage nose bumps, lift a drooping tip, or make the nose bridge more defined.
The procedure of Artefill injections into the nose has been called a “15 minute nose job” because it takes well under an hour in the doctor's office. First, the doctor applies a numbing cream to minimize discomfort. Then, using a fine needle, Artefill is injected into various regions of the nose. Following this treatment, patients are able to return to their normal daily routine immediately.
This injectable filler consists of miniature beads of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) suspended in a gel comprised of bovine collagen. Once injected, the solution itself fills in depressions in the skin, while the PMMA microspheres stimulate the body to produce its own collagen.
Longer Lasting Results
One advantage of Artefill over other injectables used for non-surgical nose jobs is the amount of time it remains in the body. As the injected collagen disappears, the newly produced collagen replaces it, giving ArteFill results that last long after the injection itself is gone. This filler is known for longer-lasting results when compared with other cosmetic filler injections. Many patients find that the results are still visible as long as five years after treatment.
Non-surgical nose jobs using ArteFill do have some risks that patients should be aware of. After the injection, mild bruising, swelling, or redness may be noticed around the nose. Usually, these side effects subside within a day. Less commonly patients may experience itching or increased sensitivity around injection sites. A more serious risk is that of an allergic reaction. Because the Artefill injection uses bovine collagen, an allergy test is required prior to the injection, as some people are sensitive to this collagen. In general, non-surgical nose jobs are considered a safer alternative to rhinoplasty surgery.
